Annika , Abigail and Julia posters were picked for the finals. Even though they did not win first place their posters were included in the finals. Congratulations girls!.
NewBrook Energy Project
With the school’s boilers on their last legs, the Brookline-Newfane Joint School Board and NewBrook Principal Chris Pratt formed an Energy Committee in March 2012. The Committee includes Chris, Ken McFadden (School Board), Kim Friedman (School Board), Patrick Mace (Building Manager), Gordon Bristol (consultant and Newfane resident) and Frank Rucker (WCSU CFO). Together, we have been exploring options for a new heating system for the school.
Early on in the process, the School Board identified the following goals to help guide our thinking:
· Go as “green” as possible while remaining fiscally responsible;
· Reduce or eliminate the school’s carbon footprint;
· Provide opportunities for student learning regarding the value of investing in renewable energy;
· Promote use of renewable energy in educational facilities in Vermont.
In an effort to be responsive to and learn from the community, the School Board has held three informational meetings on this topic and plans to hold a final meeting in September.
At its April Board meeting, the School Board voted to pursue a geothermal heating system and photovoltaic (solar) electrical system, which together would meet all of the school’s energy needs. The Board and the Energy Committee are now researching financing options. The Board will propose a bond to pay for at least some of the project. The public vote on that bond will take place in September or October. If the voters in Newfane and Brookline approve the bond, the project will be put out to bid. Once a contractor is selected, construction and installation would begin in the late fall/early winter, with the system going on-line next summer (2014).

June Taste Tests are on this Wednesday, June 5th!
The second grade will begin preparing the mixed greens and maple balsamic vinaigrette at 11:00 AM.
If you are a parent volunteer, please meet in Pat Branley's classroom to help the small groups prepare for the tasting. If you have any of these tools at home, please bring!
The students will spin the greens, make the dressing and divvy up into the small cups in order to distribute at both lunch times. If you are able to stay to help with the passing and surveying, we need you!!!!
Let me know if anyone has questions.
