With the school’s boilers on their last legs, the Brookline-Newfane Joint School Board and NewBrook Principal Chris Pratt formed an Energy Committee in March 2012. The Committee includes Chris, Ken McFadden (School Board), Kim Friedman (School Board), Patrick Mace (Building Manager), Gordon Bristol (consultant and Newfane resident) and Frank Rucker (WCSU CFO). Together, we have been exploring options for a new heating system for the school.
Early on in the process, the School Board identified the following goals to help guide our thinking:
· Go as “green” as possible while remaining fiscally responsible;
· Reduce or eliminate the school’s carbon footprint;
· Provide opportunities for student learning regarding the value of investing in renewable energy;
· Promote use of renewable energy in educational facilities in Vermont.
In an effort to be responsive to and learn from the community, the School Board has held three informational meetings on this topic and plans to hold a final meeting in September.
At its April Board meeting, the School Board voted to pursue a geothermal heating system and photovoltaic (solar) electrical system, which together would meet all of the school’s energy needs. The Board and the Energy Committee are now researching financing options. The Board will propose a bond to pay for at least some of the project. The public vote on that bond will take place in September or October. If the voters in Newfane and Brookline approve the bond, the project will be put out to bid. Once a contractor is selected, construction and installation would begin in the late fall/early winter, with the system going on-line next summer (2014).
