Farm to School
Our Localvore Journey
For the past 13 years NewBrook has been growing their farm to school program. Several years ago we constructed raised bed "teaching gardens" in the school yard that are used both during the school year and during the summer camp programs. We are happy to be in our sixth year of a school lunch program that brings local foods to the cafeteria tables for breakfast and lunch. We also were the recipients of a sizable farm to school grant and have been working hard to design and implement lots of exciting new programs with this added resource. As if that weren't enough, we also received another grant several years ago to purchase and install a salad bar in our school cafeteria space. Students will now be given many more fresh, local options of fruits and veggies with each meal at school.
Starting in 2017, we were able to hire a farm-to-school educator who works in every classroom each week through the school year teaching and learning about all the ways local foods can be a part of our lives.
Special yearly events that have become a part of the fabric of our school's culture include the November Harvest Community Dinner/Art Show and Farm and Field Day in the spring.
